Anny Salas
Anny Salas was born and raised in East Los Angeles, CA, and has been dedicated to education for over a decade. Her journey began as a tutor across multiple subjects in LA County, followed by a Communications and Marketing internship with the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. Passionate about science education, she also volunteered with various astronomy outreach programs across the city and served as President of the Physics and Astronomy Club at East Los Angeles College. Ten years ago, Anny moved to Albuquerque, NM, after being accepted into the Astrophysics and Geology undergraduate programs at the University of New Mexico. She later worked as a Middle School Science Teacher in Albuquerque before transitioning to a role as a Business Consultant for Subway Restaurants in Colorado and New Mexico. Her career took a pivotal turn when she became a correctional officer at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center. During her time there, she developed a strong interest in correctional education, informally tutoring inmates under her supervision. This passion led her to a full-time teaching role with Gordon Bernell Charter School (GBCS), where she taught adult education and GED courses to incarcerated individuals. Now serving as the Adult Education Coordinator for GBCS, Anny has played a crucial role in improving student outcomes. Through her data-driven programming and strategic leadership, she increased MSG (Measurable Skill Gains) at GBCS from 9% to 67% in just two fiscal years. She is also an active member of the New Mexico State Data Committee and has contributed to the AE Teacher Credentialing Committee for the state. Anny was also a SCOPE NM Student Delegate for the Fall 2024 cohort. She hopes to use her background and passion in Astronomy & Space Exploration to create a Rocket Engine IET for correctional institutions.
