Proposal for Adult Education Cooking Class at GBCS
Overview:
Gordon Bernell Charter School (GBCS) Adult Education Program proposes a weekly cooking class to engage students in a hands-on, enjoyable learning experience that builds essential life skills. This class would be conducted voluntarily by Adult Education (AE) staff and is designed to complement our Integrated Education and Training (IET) program by enhancing student readiness and participation.
Class Details:
- Day/Time: Wednesdays, 9:30-11:00am
- Location: Career Development Center (CDC) Kitchen
- Instructor: Jessy Young and AE staff volunteers
Objectives:
The cooking class is designed to:
- Prepare students for IET by developing practical skills that foster independence and self-confidence.
- Increase student engagement in the AE program through a fun and interactive activity.
- Provide a supportive environment for students to collaborate, learn, and strengthen community bonds within GBCS.
Structure and Guidelines:
- Student Participation: Students will be required to sign a permission slip acknowledging kitchen safety guidelines and their responsibility for setup and cleanup.
- Code of Conduct: All participants will be asked to follow instructor directions, adhere to safety protocols, and help maintain a clean kitchen after each session.
- Instructional Flexibility: The class will be led by AE staff on a voluntary basis and will not conflict with AE instructional hours or the high school meal service.
Benefits:
This cooking class will provide valuable life skills, reinforce classroom learning, and foster a greater sense of community among students and staff. We believe it will enhance the student experience at GBCS and support their educational and personal growth.
