Our largest campus, the Men’s program has a pod (housing unit) specifically reserved to house GBCS students and seven classroom spaces in the E wing of the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center.  Students here attend classes from 8:00am to 2:30pm, Monday thru Thursday.  Besides offering all of the academic courses needed to meet New Mexico high school graduation requirements, the Men’s Program has developed a reading program and ESL program to meet the needs of our student population.  In addition, the Men’s Program incorporates a counseling component called MRT (Moral Reconation Therapy) taught by Dr. Ron Gallegos, our resident clinical psychologist, which helps students develop self-reflection, honesty and strong decision-making skills.  Every student is required to attend a week of MRT upon first enrolling in our program and then can choose whether to continue to pursue it further for academic credit.  The MRT class has been very popular and many students have cited this as their primary reason for coming to our downtown campus after their release from MDC.  The Men’s Program has also generated its own advisory body, the Men’s Council, where students and teachers meet to identify problems and needs of the campus and to brainstorm solutions.  In the 2008-09 school year, the Men’s Program at MDC served over 700 students, dozens of whom successfully made the transition to our downtown Roma Campus upon release, and four who went on to graduate later that year.  To boost the transition rate, we have hired a job counselor and social worker to assist students prior to release and once they are out.
